Samwon Garden Main Branch — Hanok Galbi Restaurant for Family Gatherings and Formal Meetings in Yangjaecheon

For gatherings involving elders in the Yeoksam and Dogok areas, Samwon Garden’s main branch has long been my go-to choice. Its traditional hanok structure along Yangjaecheon, complete with a garden and pond, and its spacious ambiance capable of accommodating a wide range of ages, make it an irreplaceable option. This review focuses on a recent visit for my mother’s birthday.

First Discovery, and Return Visits

I first discovered this place for a family event. Over 10 years ago, we celebrated my grandfather’s 70th birthday here, and since then, it has naturally become our choice for Parents’ Day, birthdays, and pre-상견례 gatherings. The name “Samwon Garden” carries a generational weight, making it a self-explanatory choice when elders are present.

This visit was for my mother’s birthday. We had a total of 10 people, including both sets of parents and siblings’ families, and we booked a private room in the annex building.

Location and Reservations

The restaurant is located on Eonju-ro, on the north side of Yangjaecheon. It’s within a 10-minute drive from both Gangnam Station and Yangjae Station. Walking from the subway is a bit far, so for gatherings with elders, a car or a called taxi is more convenient. Reservations can be made by phone or through their official website. During peak family event seasons (Parents’ Day, holidays, year-end), it’s safer to book 2-3 weeks in advance.

Parking and Flow

Both self-parking and valet services are available. Even on weekends, the wait isn’t usually long, and the path to the entrance is short when accompanied by elders. The complex has a hanok village structure with separate main and annex buildings, so the walking distance varies depending on the assigned room. If you leave a note “accompanied by elders” when booking, you’re often assigned a room with a shorter route.

Space and Setting

The main building and annex rooms are separate. The very act of walking through the central garden to the annex creates a signal that “the gathering has begun.” Rooms are configured for 4, 6, 8, or 10-12 people, with the 10-12 person rooms for 상견례 and family events being the most competitive. For a three-generation family (grandparents, parents, children) in one room, an 8-person room with extra space allocation is a reasonable choice.

Menu We Had Today

This visit featured a course with marinated galbi and hanwoo sirloin.

  • Marinated galbi (2 servings) — Not overly sweet, the charcoal grill played its essential role. This was the point where the elders in our three-generation group remarked, “This tastes like the galbi we ate when we were young.”
  • Hanwoo sirloin (2 servings) — The grilling staff intervened at just the right moments.
  • Royal Tteokbokki (side) — Not spicy, a safe choice when dining with children.
  • Doenjang-jjigae · Naengmyeon · Rice — For finishing the meal. The naengmyeon broth was rich.
  • Sujeonggwa · Yakgwa — Dessert. This was the most popular item among the elders.

My Order Combination and Budget

For 10 people, the total came to approximately 1.5 million KRW, averaging 150K KRW per person. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Meat: 4 servings of marinated galbi + 3 servings of sirloin (approx. 800K KRW)
  • Sides/Meals: Royal Tteokbokki, doenjang-jjigae, naengmyeon set (approx. 300K KRW)
  • Alcohol: Soju, beer, cheongju (approx. 150K KRW)
  • Dessert/Tea (included)
  • Room usage fee: None (automatically assigned based on headcount)

From an organizer’s perspective, the fact that the per-person cost doesn’t vary much for large gatherings is advantageous.

Service and Operations

What I trust most is their expertise in handling “gatherings with elders.” The timing of their intervention for grilling meat, the speed of side dish refills, and the serving intervals that don’t interrupt conversation are all well-orchestrated. Family-specific requests like high chairs, baby utensils, and small plates for side dishes are handled naturally. Pre-setting flower cakes and requesting birthday greetings can also be arranged via a note in the reservation.

Situational Assessment

  • Three-generation family gathering — Excellent. High baseline for space, food, and service.
  • Parents’ birthday / Parents’ Day — Excellent. Flower cake setup requests possible.
  • 상견례 (formal family introductions) — Excellent. Adjust formality by choosing between main building or annex rooms.
  • Entertaining international guests — Excellent. Easy to explain its position as “traditional Korean galbi.”
  • Dating — Not recommended. The scale and atmosphere are geared towards group gatherings.
  • Solo dining — Not applicable.

Intention to Revisit

It’s a fixed choice for family events. I anticipate booking a room at the same establishment for the next Parents’ Day. The structure and price point are not suitable for light meals for 1-2 people, so it’s a card I only play when the purpose is clear.
